Event Details
Over the course of this research project, the increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity that characterises the world of work was evident in the unprecedented severity of the drought that spread through cotton production valleys.
More recently, the industry is bouncing back following substantial rainfall, but it is the āblack swanā event of an international pandemic and consequent border closures restricting access to seasonal labour that may now limit production.
We may not be able to precisely predict our future, but we can prepare by improving our ability to proactively adapt to the ever-shifting forces that impact work in the cotton industry. I hope that by sharing the innovative approaches to work that are happening within the cotton industry businesses profiled in this study, others can gain insights into a variety of approaches to adapt and strategically develop their businesses and support the people that power the industry to grow into new ways of working.
By doing this we ensure that collectively, the cotton industry is ready to approach future challenges, whatever they may be, in a way that ensures a sustainable, productive, and profitable industry in the years to come.

Event Details
The role of parental expectations in determining children’s higher education participation is important in understanding both participation and potential policy responses.
Using a nationally representative longitudinal survey of Australian households, providing repeat observations on expectations for individual children, this study extends the literature in several respects.
First, it examines the adaptation of parental expectations over a 4-year time frame. Second, it looks at how parental expectations for school children are associated with actual higher education outcomes in the future. Third, the longitudinal aspect of the dataset permits more robust analyses of factors that shape parental expectations.
The findings indicate that parental expectations of their children’s attendance at university are generally stable across time. Perceptions of children’s academic achievement at school are shown to be the key influence in shaping parents’ expectations, and behavioural issues at school adversely affect expectations.
Australian parents from non-English-speaking backgrounds were more likely to form positive expectations of university participation by their children, consistent with studies from other countries. A more nuanced picture of the formation of expectations for sole-parent mothers is also presented.
Positive effects of parental education and children’s enrolment in a private school on parents’ expectations, over and above any effect on school achievement, highlight these socioeconomic factors as potential causal channels for the intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic outcomes.

Event Details
Care-leavers have experienced removal from their parental home during childhood. This may be as a result of neglect, abuse, death of family members or inability of family members to care for them. There are approximately 45,000 children in care in Australia and child protection orders are growing (AIHW, 2020).
This project provides suggestions for practice including to higher education institutions, career practitioner professional groups and jurisdictions about how to present information that promotes higher education transition, and to higher education providers on more inclusive measures to attract
and support care-leavers.
The findings presented in this report uncover valuable information about the systemic barriers for young people with out of home care experience and possible avenues that could enhance the equitable access to higher education.

Event Details
Based on social cognitive career theory, we examined the mediating roles of job search self-efficacy and outcome expectations in the relationship between adolescentāparent career congruence and job search preparatory behaviors and investigated the influence of proactivity as a moderator in these direct and indirect relationships.
Participants were 236 Grade 10 and 11 Indonesian students (mean age 16 years, 67% male), who were attending a vocational education school and would not be progressing to post-high school study.
After controlling for educational achievement, we found congruence to be associated with self-efficacy (24% of variance explained), outcome expectations (23%), and job search preparatory behaviours (46%). Self-efficacy, but not outcome expectations, was related to more preparatory behaviours, and self-efficacy fully mediated between congruence and preparatory behaviours.
Proactivity moderated the direct relationships between congruence and self-efficacy and outcome expectations, but not preparatory behaviours, and did not moderate any of the indirect relationships.
